American Killed by Bow And Arrow After Trying to Visit Remote Indian Island

An American missionary was killed by a bow and arrow after trying to visit a remote Indian island where an island tribe has remained cut off from the rest of the outside world, police said Wednesday.

According to police, John Allen Chau, 27, was illegally ferried by fishermen to North Sentinel Island last week, which is located in the Bay of Bengal between India and Burma. It's illegal for people to make contact with the Sentinelese tribe who live there, in order to protect their indigenous way of life and prevent the spread of disease.

Police told Reuters that Chau was a preacher who had visited the area in the past and reportedly wanted to make contact with the tribe. Chau expressed interest in proselytizing to them, the source revealed.

The AFP reports that sources told them that Chau took a boat ride and switched to a canoe to go ashore. However, once he made it to the beach, he was "attacked by arrows" but continued walking.

The fishermen who ferried Chau to the island saw members of the tribe tying a rope around his neck and dragging his body.

Chau's body has not been recovered.

Seven people have been arrested.

"The investigation in this matter is on," senior police officer Deepak Yadav said in a press release.

"Adventure awaits. So do leeches," the final post on his Instagram account, dated Nov. 2 read.
